The Impact of Robotics in the Military

May 17, 2022

Robotic technology has become increasingly important in warfare, offering many advantages and benefits. Though it is often controversial, proponents argue that it can save the lives of soldiers, while others point out the possible moral and ethical issues involved. In this blog post, we will dive deep into the impact of robotics in the military by comparing the utilization of robots to traditional methods.

Advantages of Robotics in Military

Cost-effective

The primary advantage of using robots for military purposes is cost-effectiveness when compared to human soldiers. The total cost of an average soldier is much more expensive than the cost of a robot, including all the training, equipment, and benefits. However, robots can be programmed to complete many of the routine and mundane tasks, freeing up human soldiers to focus on more critical tasks.

Improved efficiency and effectiveness

Using robots has proven to be more efficient and effective in performing certain tasks. For instance, during bomb disposal missions, robots can navigate through spaces that are too dangerous for humans, retrieve and dispose of the explosive device without putting the lives of soldiers at risk. It is also crucial in performing tasks that are repetitive, requiring a high level of accuracy, such as surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence gathering.

Enhance situational awareness

Robots equipped with advanced sensors and imaging technology can provide soldiers with a better understanding of the battlefield's geography and enemy locations. Sensors can detect hazardous materials, chemical, and biological threats. These sensors can detect threats and provide soldiers with the exact coordinates, allowing soldiers to make more informed and strategic decisions.

Disadvantages of Robotics in Military

Designer biases

Robots are designed, built, and programmed by humans; they can carry over some of their creators' biases and prejudices. Hence, military robots and drones could be used to create and perpetuate inequalities and discrimination in the military, resulting in unjust and biased decisions.

Dependence on Technology

The military heavily depends on technology, including robots. Any system failure or malfunction can result in an impaired mission or eventual failure. Besides, the military may become too dependent on robotic technology, leading to the possible inability to operate without them.

Lack of Human Connection

Robots are unable to establish a rapport with human soldiers, companionship, or trust. This lack of human connection can have a profound impact on the soldiers' morale and motivation. Additionally, robots' inability to decipher human emotions also places its response to scenarios into question, making its feedback unreliable in the field.

In conclusion, robotics has made a significant impact on the military in both positive and negative measures. Despite the pros and cons, there is no denying that robotic technology is here to stay and will continue to develop as the world becomes more technologically advanced. With proper regulations and ethical considerations, it could be the key to keeping soldiers safe, reducing human casualties, and helping win wars with more efficiency.
